Yesterday, 8 September, marked the 55th anniversary of Star Trek. What started as one TV show lasting three years has since spawned a pop cultural behemoth spanning movies, shows, merchandise and an enduring fan base. Paramount was naturally not going to pass up the chance to promote its current burgeoning crop of Trek series, and all the shows got something – from trailers to news that Star Trek: Picard, starring Star Trek: The Next Generation veteran Patrick Stewart, has scored a third season even before its second has aired.
Also featured was a brand new trailer for that second season, which will see Picard and his comrades forced to travel back in time when pesky omnipotent blowhard Q (a returning John de Lancie) changes up the timeline, plunging Earth into a totalitarian state. Cue a mission to fix the problem with some – apparently forced – help from the Borg Queen (played here by Annie Wersching). Season 2 will kick off in February next year.
In other Trek news, the Strange New Worlds spin-off from Discovery starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Peck as Mr. Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One (AKA Una Chin-Riley). Joining them are Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel (another role, like Number One, once played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry), Christina Chong as La’an Noonien-Singh (clearly some relation to classic villain Khan), Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura (the role made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the original series), Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga, a character who appeared in a couple of TOS episodes, while Melissa Navia and Bruce Horak are new characters Lt. Erica Ortegas and Hemmer.
Strange New Worlds, which charts Pike and co's adventures on the Enterprise in the pre-Kirk era, will debut next year.
We also now know when Star Trek: Discovery returns for a fourth season on 18 November.
Finally, there were trailers for comedy series Lower Decks (currently airing it second season) and younger audience show Star Trek: Prodigy, which will launch in the US on 28 October. See them below...
