Christmas has come early to the Silo this week, with welcome news that Apple’s excellent subterranean saga won’t be coming to an abrupt end any time soon. While we’re still just halfway through the show’s second season on Apple TV+, the streamer announced today that the series has not only been renewed for Season Three, but it’s also been picked up for a fourth and final instalment as well. What's more, both of the seasons are already well into production and will film back to back throughout next year.
“We’ll be shooting all of 2025 into early 2026,” confirms Graham Yost when Empire speaks to the showrunner on the set of Silo at Hoddesdon Studios in Hertfordshire. “There's a big location that we're going to introduce toward the end of Season 3 that plays a very big role in Season 4. And because we shoot all 10 episodes [of each season] at the same time, we had to write Season 3 and then basically go right into writing season 4.” Eminently sensible, then, to make the most of the colossal set currently occupying Hoddesdon’s main soundstage and barrel straight on to the finish line by doing both seasons at once.
For those yet to immerse themselves in the world of Silo, the series takes place several hundred years from now, with the last of humanity living deep underground in a mile-deep structure that protects them from the radiation-ravaged wasteland on the surface. The Silo is governed by strict, authoritarian rule that limits all knowledge of life prior to its construction and keeps its 10,000 residents almost entirely in the dark as to what exists beyond the concrete walls — a rule newly minted Silo sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) takes firm exception to in Season 1.
A big hit for Apple when it launched last year, Silo joins a growing collection of lavish sci-fi series on the streamer, taking its place alongside the likes of Foundation, Dark Matter, Constellation, Severance, and For All Mankind. Over the past few years, Apple has established itself as the de facto home for cerebral, adult sci-fi — something that, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook, is far from accidental. “We set our sights on that,” Cook tells Empire. “We give great storytellers the chance to breathe and to tell their stories. We want to make content that makes a difference in the world in some kind of way. It moves you to think about something on a deeper level, so it's both great entertainment and it makes a difference.” Silo, adds Cook, also happens to be one of his favourite shows.
Based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling book trilogy, Silo spent its first two seasons focused on the first novel in the series, Wool, while the third and fourth seasons will cover off the sequels Shift and Dust, bringing the story to completion by the end of its four year run.
If you’ve yet to slip into Silo’s dystopian embrace, now's the time to start as the second season is currently streaming on Apple TV+. You can also hear our full interview with Tim Cook and Rebecca Ferguson from the set of Silo Season 3 (and 4) on this week’s episode of Pilot TV.
