Russian Doll Season 2

A second season of Russian Doll. What a concept! The Groundhog Day-inspired Netflix series was a word-of-mouth hit for the streaming platform back in 2019, thanks to its razor-sharp wit, heartfelt emotional core, explorations of the meaning of life and death, and Natasha Lyonne’s generally iconic nature – but with her character Nadia and Charlie Barnett’s Alan escaping from their endlessly fatal time loop in the season finale, where can the show go next? Netflix have given us a glimpse, sharing four brand new images from the second season, and Natasha Lyonne has spoken cryptically to Entertainment Weekly about what to expect.

“It’s definitely a wild ride,” says Lyonne. “It is deep, and deeply off-the-wall.” The images feature Nadia (signature glam-rock style and flowing red curls intact) and Alan (sporting a notable new moustache), as well as Nadia’s friend Maxine (Greta Lee) and Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy as a brand new character – one that we don’t know the name of yet, but that Lyonne says will be the “core component and the heart of the season.”

Lyonne also reveals that the new season picks up four years after the events of the first, with Nadia and Alan once again digging deep into questions of mortality when they come across an unexpected time portal in Manhattan that forces them to look through their pasts. There’s also sure to be callbacks to Nadia’s signature turns of phrase (“cock-a-roach!”), and hopefully some scenes with Oatmeal the cat. “It’s for sure a puzzle box,” Lyonne teases. We’ll get to solve it later this year, with Russian Doll Season 2 due to arrive on Netflix in the spring.
