Here's news we really didn't expect to be reporting: Russell T. Davies, who led the relaunch of Doctor Who back in 2005, is returning to run the show again after Chris Chibnall departs next years.
Davies, the man behind such shows as Queer As Folk, A Very English Scandal, Years And Years and, most recently, It's A Sin ran Who until 2009, overseeing the tenure of actors Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, and creating spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Steven Moffat followed his run, introducing Matt Smith in the central role, followed by Peter Capaldi. Chibnall, the most recent Who boss, has had Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor during his time on the show. They are both departing next year after a six-episode series run later this year and three specials in 2022.
"I'm beyond excited to be back on my favourite show," says Davies, who resumes his role as the show prepares to mark its 60th anniversary in 2023. "There's a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm. "I'm still a viewer for now."
