We all know RoboCop's Prime Directives: Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law. But soon we'll be discovering RoboCop's Prime Video Directives, as Amazon's upcoming TV series based on the iconic sci-fi franchise continues to build up a head of steam. Per Deadline's reporting, The Office US and Pushing Daisies veteran Peter Ocko has been tapped to write, showrun, and executive produce the prospective new series, with Conjuring universe creator James Wan also aboard to EP under his Atomic Monster banner.
First floated as an idea for Amazon when the company purchased MGM Studios for a staggering $8.5 billion back in 2022, this new take on RoboCop will be the first screen outing for the cyborg law enforcer since the somewhat lacklustre 2014 reboot with Joel Kinnaman. As per Paul Verhoeven's original 1987 classic, Amazon's RoboCop is set to once again centre around a part-man, part-machine man of the law tasked with cleaning up the streets at the behest of his tech conglomerate and local PD overlords. Whether said cyborg copper will be Detroit, Michigan's finest Alex Murphy or an all-new, original character remains to be seen.
In recent years, we've seen talk of RoboCop sequel movies and prequel series floated, all before invariably eventually dying on the vine. In fact, the best RoboCop since the '87 original has most probably been last year's video game take on the futuristic lawman, RoboCop: Rogue City, a love letter to the franchise that proved there's still some oil in the franchise's tank yet. And so, despite having been burned before and there being no 100% confirmation that Ocko and Wan's RoboCop is coming anytime in the imminent future, we remain cautiously optimistic we'll get to see Verhoeven's teched-up Tin Man back taking names and kicking bad guys' asses before long. And that? Well, we'd buy that for a dollar (or $8.5 billion if we were Jeff Bezos!).
