The Flintstones has long since cemented its place in the pantheon of animated TV series, inspiring movies and more than one small-screen spin-off. Elizabeth Banks is adding to that group, producing and taking a lead voice role in Bedrock for US TV network Fox.
Banks has been developing the series for a couple of years now, working alongside Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous writer Lindsay Kerns, who will be in charge of the pilot script and would likely run the show if it makes it to series.
Bedrock will follow the Flintstone family two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles (Banks) embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the transition will not be easy for all residents of Bedrock. Don't expect the tone to be as totally family friendly as the adventures of Fred and co., though, as this will be a little more grown up in tone.
This comes a decade after Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane tried his own take, with a reboot at Fox that didn't fly. Banks will be hoping for more of a rock-solid success this time. And it'll also followed a 1993 TV movie that chronicled the life of a similarly grown Pebbles, working at an ad agency and moving to 'Hollyrock'. Expect plenty of takes on modern society here, in keeping with the original show's jabs at life.
