Given that he only had a certain window to write and (partly) direct the series between finishing The Suicide Squad and kicking off prep for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn has thrown himself into quickly cranking out this small-screen spin-off from the former – which sees the return of John Cena's foul-mouthed, lunkheaded Peacemaker. The latest trailer for the show has landed, and includes all the swearing, violence and silly humour you might have expected and, indeed, hoped for.
Peacemaker catches up with Cena's Christopher Smith after he – spoiler alert – survived a near death shooting/building collapse in the movie. Recruited by the government in exchange for zero jail time after his betrayal during the mission, he's now a hired gun – which seemingly suits him fine... Until his resolve wobbles in the face of the mission's demands. Something his tough dad, Auggie (Robert Patrick), won't look kindly on.
The show will feature, according to Gunn, a giant science fiction story and some delving into how Smith became the douchebag we know him to be.
With Danielle Brooks as Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Chukwudi Iwuji as Murn and Steve Agee as Economos, Peacemaker will be on US screens via HBO Max on 13 January, kicking off with three episodes, with one following weekly for a total of eight. No official word on a UK date yet, but it should hopefully pop up before too long.
