In the scientific world, there remains to this day no single solution to the three-body problem. But if you — like us — are fans of Alexander Woo and Game Of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's Netflix series 3 Body Problem on the other hand, it turns out the solution is really quite simple. More series! And that's exactly what we'll be getting. Now, true to the spirit of the brain-bending sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem's renewal isn't 100% straightforward. The series' renewal comes with confirmation that Woo, Benioff, and Weiss will get to take their ambitious (and seriously pricey) adaptation of Cixin Liu’s masterful trilogy of novels "through to its epic conclusion." But precisely how many episodes and/or seasons that will take remains unconfirmed as of yet, with Netflix enigmatically saying in a press release that the info will be announced at a later date. We do, however, know that the showrunners themselves have previously talked about a four-season plan to tackle Liu's three books. But with the first season of the show weaving in elements from across the trilogy, it could well wind up taking less — or possibly even more — time to reach Death's End's, er, end.
The first season of 3 Body Problem began with Benedict Wong's Mancunian, Marlowesque Detective Da Shi investigating a series of seemingly connected deaths within the scientific community. By its climax, the show — which also stars Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, John Bradley and Alex Sharp as the alien-stalked 'Oxford 5' — had reached the dawn of all-out intergalactic war. It's properly ambitious stuff with a profoundly human core, which only makes the series' renewal in this age of cancellations left, right, and centre all the sweeter.
In a statement accompanying the renewal announcement, VP of scripted series at Netflix, Peter Frielander said: "The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo, will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End.
