They may have only just reached the halfway point on shooting Stranger Things Season 5, but Matt and Ross Duffer — better known as The Duffer Brothers — are already plotting their next Upside Down Pictures production at Netflix. Yesterday, the streaming giant announced that it has just greenlit creator-showrunner Haley Z. Boston's original psychological horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen, which the Duffers are set to executive produce alongside Hilary Leavitt as part of their overall Upside Down deal with Netflix.
Details on Boston's series are scarce at the moment, but the official logline — much like the prophetically portentous title — makes for intriguing reading, describing the show as "an atmospheric horror series set at a wedding, following a bride and groom in the week leading up to their ill-fated nuptials. That’s not a spoiler – just read the title…” Who the bride and groom are, what ill fate befalls their nuptials, and precisely what very bad something is going to happen is a total mystery to us as of now. However, Boston brings promising genre chops to the project, having previously written on both anthology chiller series Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities and Brand New Cherry Flavour for Netflix. And the fact the multi-hyphenate creative's show joins the Duffers' own in-the-works sci-fi series The Burroughs and a new live-action Death Note adaptation shows the duo have high hopes for whatever Boston's cooking.
"We were knocked flat when we first read Haley’s script," said The Duffer Brothers in a joint statement to Netflix. "She is a major new talent with a singular voice — her writing is twisted, terrifying, funny, and just … very Haley. We feel so lucky to be producing her first show, and we can’t wait to share her vision with the rest of the world.”
We'll share more on Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen just as soon as we get further word on the show. But honestly, with Boston at the helm, the Duffers overseeing the series, and a killer hook already being teased, it actually seems like something very good is going to happen. But first, we've got a Stranger Things finale to prepare for. Catch you in the Upside Down, nerds!
