It feels like we've waited a century for someone to finally, actually adapt Neil Gaiman's iconic Sandman comics for the screen and, via Netflix, here are. Announced as part of the streaming service's Geeked Week, the new teaser for the show has landed...

The basic – very basic, because this story has capital L-layers, time zones, characters and narratives – plot description runs thus: "When the Sandman, aka Dream (Tom Sturridge), the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams, is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused."

According to Gaiman, who helped develop the show and consulted with series bosses Allan Heinberg and David S. Goyer, the first 10-episode season will cover to the end of The Doll's House, the second trade paperback collection of his work.

Also among the cast? Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Vanesu Samunyai, John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James-Young and Razane Jammal.

Oh, and because this is the week for announcements, we also now know that Mark Hamill is voicing Merv Pumpkinhead.

The Sandman will launch on Netflix on 5 August.
