The Master of Horror and, well, the other Master of Horror are back in business! That's right folks, after successfully helming 2017's Gerald's Game, 2019's Doctor Sleep and the already critically acclaimed — and hopefully soon to be released — The Life Of Chuck, it looks like Midnight Mass maestro Mike Flanagan is set to work his magic on another Stephen King classic. According to Deadline, Flanagan — who's already got a new Dark Tower series in his Prime Video pipeline — is gearing up to helm an 8-episode adaptation of King's epochal 1974 novel Carrie at Amazon.
Now we bring you this news with a small pinch of salt (word of a Flanagan Carrie series was first shared via Deadline's grapevine column The Dish), but given Flanagan's existing Amazon overall deal and his aforementioned prior successes taking King's work from page to screen, there's enough credibility to these reports to suggest our hype train is fit to leave the station. What's more, Variety have corroborated the story and have even shared a logline for the prospective series, which follows in the footsteps of Brian DePalma's classic 1976 movie and 2012's Chloë Grace Moretz led remake: “[Flanagan's Carrie is] a bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers."
Despite the historically hit-and-miss nature of King adaptations, the getting's been good for fans of the legendary horror author in recent times. Gary Dauberman's Salem's Lot finally hit cinemas this month, production is ramping up on Edgar Wright's upcoming The Running Man retooling, and Francis Lawrence is assembling quite the cast for his take on The Long Walk, too. As for Flanagan's Carrie, we'll bring you more on the project just as soon as we get it, and in the meantime we'll pray, we'll pray, we'll pray for the last time that it all comes together sooner rather than later!
