Sound the Take Shelter reunion klaxon (it sounds like a storm warning)! News arrives that Michael Shannon has officially joined the cast of new miniseries George And Tammy, in which he'll play George Jones to Jessica Chastain's Tammy Wynette.

Jones and Wynette were something of a power couple in Country & Western music, and their marriage inspired such songs as 'We're Gonna Hold On' and 'Golden Ring'. Yet behind the scenes, there was much conflict and drama, with Jones' alcoholism partly leading to their dissolution after six years.

Abe Sylvia created the series, which adapts tell-all memoir The Three Of Us: Growing Up With Tammy And George, written by the couple’s daughter, Georgette Jones, who was four when her parents' marriage collapsed and faced her own struggles before she became an accomplished singer in her own right.

Chastain and Shannon will be singing the various songs themselves, while John Hillcoat is directing all six episodes. The series will debut on Spectrum in the US before heading to Paramount+, which might be where it shows in the UK.

Yesterday, Chastain hit twitter to mark today's planned start of shooting, and that certainly looks like Walton Goggins hanging out with the central pair and creative team, alongside Steve Zahn, who we now know will play George Richey, who married Tammy after she and George 1.0 split up, and also became her manager.
