While 2021 has offered a bounty of Marvel Cinematic Universe series and movies so far (WandaVision! The Falcon And The Winter Soldier! Black Widow! Loki! Shang-Chi!) one key figure has been largely absent. Aside from a few voice appearances in the What If…? animated series, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has been AWOL – last seen at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home on some kind of space station. But fear not: 2022 will bring all kinds of Fury-ous fun in Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, and Disney+ series Secret Invasion. Jackson’s work on the latter of those projects has officially begun, marked by the actor posting a picture on Instagram wearing a choice piece of clothing.
How’s that for, er, snappy dressing? Jackson wrote that it’s “time to get back in the groove” and that he’s “happy to be back on the attack” along with some amusing hashtags: ‘#secretinvasion’, ‘#backwithafury’, and best of all, ‘#fuckthatsnap’. Things have been tricksy for Fury in the wake of Infinity War and Endgame. He was, as Jackson’s t-shirt alludes to, snapped by Thanos just after summoning Captain Marvel to the fray, and was eventually blipped back into existence. But a final-act reveal in Spider-Man: Far From Home showed that Jackson was in fact playing a shape-shifting Skrull through the course of that film – and that the real Fury is off on some kind of intergalactic mission.
The Secret Invasion series should explore Skrull-duggery of some kind, reteaming Jackson with Ben Mendelsohn’s green-skinned Talos, alongside an excellent incoming cast that includes Olivia Colman, Emilia Clark, and Kingsley Ben-Adir, who’s reported to play some kind of villainous role. The six-episode series will be directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim, and the head writer is Mr. Robot veteran Kyle Bradstreet. Bring on the Fury.
