Luca Guadagnino has been busy in recent years. In the wake of Call Me By Your Name, the Italian filmmaker gave us the controversial Suspiria remake and short film The Staggering Girl, he's attached to a new version of Scarface – and he’s also directed every episode of a new eight-part HBO series titled We Are Who We Are, arriving on screens later this year. The show is a coming-of-age drama starring Jack Dylan Grazer (of Shazam! and It fame) and Jordan Kristine Seamon as teenagers living on an American military base in Italy. The series is due to air from September on HBO in the States – and rather than going to Sky Atlantic here, as most HBO series tend to, it’s been picked up for UK airing by the BBC. The series will stream on iPlayer as a BBC Three show – though it may well also get a TV airing in a more traditional sense. Elsewhere, the cast includes Chloë Sevigny and Kid Cudi. “With We Are Who We Are we are attempting to portray the here and now of two families, few generations, many exciting people,” Guadagnino says. “To see the world from their perspective is what I am delighted to share with UK audiences. To do so thanks to the prestigious and remarkable BBC is an accomplishment and a soothing encouragement.”
The exact plot of the show is unknown, but as Call Me By Your Name showed, Guadagnino has quite the way with coming-of-age stories about Americans living in Europe. We’ll find out if We Are Who We Are lives up to that modern classic when it hits the BBC this Autumn.
