In recent years, Amazon has cornered the market on what you may call "Dad Thrillers." Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Reacher, Bosch, The Terminal List, Cross — the list goes on. And now it looks like Prime Video may well be just about to bring us its Dadliest thriller yet. Per Deadline's reporting, John Krasinski — Jack Ryan himself — and Matthew Rhys, star of such dadly classics as Perry Mason and The Americans, are preparing to join forces and topline Silent River, an original thriller series created by Krasinski's Jack Ryan chum Aaron Rabin.
Though we know precious little about the ins and outs of the plot for this one at present, the vague description shared by Deadline has intrigue written all over it. It reads as follows: "Told through the lens of two men — played by Krasinski and Rhys — whose lives are far more connected than they realize, Silent River explores the cracks of small-town America in the wake of discovering a serial killer among them." It sounds like a recipe for a brooding, prestige slab of stone-cold thriller goodness to us, and given the involvement of Rabin as creator and confirmation that another Jack Ryan alum, Andrew Bernstein, will be directing (both of whom, by the by, are currently working on the recently announced Krasinski Jack Ryan movie for Amazon), there's plenty enough to be getting excited for here already.
“We are thrilled to continue our work with John Krasinski, Allyson Seeger, and Sunday Night on this gripping series, which delves into the mysteries and secrets of small-town America,“ said Amazon MGM Studios' head of television Vernon Sanders in a statement accompanying the series' announcement. “With John and Matthew Rhys attached to star in this wonderful story from Aaron Rabin, our global customers will be on the edge of their seats throughout this thought-provoking, psychological thriller.”
Whether Silent River will be our next Dad thriller obsession or be found, er, meandering when it eventually arrives on our screens, only time will tell. But the prospect of Jack Ryan and Perry Mason teaming up in a show from the folks who helped turn Krasinski from Jim from The Office to bona fide action man? Now that guarantees we'll be seated whenever Quiet River starts streaming.
