Henry Cavill is, without doubt and with full reverence, the undisputed king of the geeks. He's soared across the sky as DC's Man Of Steel, slain bruxas and leshies as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, bared his Cavillrine claws in Deadpool & Wolverine, and has a nice sideline in building gaming PCs. And now, two years after we first learned that the British actor would be starring in and producing a Warhammer 40,000 series with Amazon and Games Workshop, Deadline are reporting that a Warhammer TV series is now officially in development for Prime Video. And Cavill himself has even put up a new Instagram post in honour of the exciting development:
Per Deadline's reporting, a small team was assembled — and presumably gathered round a tabletop filled with Space Marines, Black Templars, and Blood Angels — to zero in on a creative direction for Cavill's burgeoning WCU (that'd be Warhammer Cinematic Universe, natch.) This meeting of minds is what's led to a TV series being confirmed as the first step in bringing the D&D-style sci-fi game to life on screen. Said meeting of minds may also have had something to do with the fact Games Workshop and Amazon only actually had until the end of this year to establish the “creative guidelines for the films and television series to be developed by Amazon”, lest the streamer lose the rights to the sprawling tabletop behemoth.
While no showrunner or plot specifics have been confirmed at this point however, as we learned when Henry Cavill talked to Empire about his dream project back in 2021, a year before securing the rights to become godhead of the WCU, whichever direction his Warhammer series takes, you can guarantee he'll be shooting for the stars with it. "I think because Games Workshop have been very protective of their IP — and that's a great decision, and very wise — there haven't been just loads of TV shows and movies all done poorly," Cavill told us at the time. "It needs to be handled perfectly. It needs to be handled to a Lord Of The Rings level. And if it's not, I'll be massively disappointed." And we all know what we got when Amazon handled an actual Lord Of The Rings show — the frankly fantastic The Rings Of Power. We don't know about you, but this new venture for Cavill is already sounding rather preciousss... (Oops, don't cross the franchise streams!)
