Awards season may well be over on the film front for another year, but on the TV front, the race for golden statue glory is far from over. Earlier today at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, the nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced in a live ceremony fronted by Emmy winners Tony Hale and Sheryl Lee Ralph alongside Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego. And leading the pack on the nominations front this time around? That'd be feudal Japanese epic Shōgun which, after a dramatic pivot from Limited Series to Drama after news of the series' surprise renewal, has bagged 25 nominations, including nods for stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai as well as shouts for Outstanding Drama, Writing, Direction, and much more besides.
Elsewhere, Jeremy Allen White starrer The Bear has proven itself to still be the hottest table in town in the comedy category (don't ask — we don't understand that category designation either), landing a category record 23 nominations, including ones for Outstanding Series as well as Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for White and Ayo Edibiri. And Netflix's unexpected but utterly deserving global phenomenon Baby Reindeer also showed up in a big way at the nominees reveal, earning 11 nominations, including Writer, Actor, and Limited Series nods for multi-hyphenate creator Richard Gadd as well as richly deserved acting nods for all of the show's primary cast.
Usual suspects Only Murders In The Building, The Morning Show, The Crown, and Abbott Elementary all received multiple nods in their respective categories, whilst among the first-time nominees highlights include Ryan Gosling, Matt Berry, Lily Gladstone, and Jack Lowden. Gosling is up for his appearance on Saturday Night Live last year, whilst the other three are up for acting awards for their roles in What We Do In The Shadows, Under The Bridge, and Slow Horses respectively. And speaking of Slow Horses, we here at Empire HQ are particularly happy to note that this year saw Slough House's disreputable bunch of MI5 spies finally get some Emmy recognition, with the Apple TV+ show bagging a neat nine noms ahead of its imminent fourth series premiere, including a long-awaited Lead Actor nod for Gary Oldman's career best work as farting spook Jackson Lamb.
There's a lot of nominees in a lot of hotly contested categories this year to get through, and we've barely even scratched the surface with our rundown of the highlights above. (3 Body Problem! Fallout! Ripley! There's just too many great pieces of Peak TV!) So, ahead of finding out who will be the winners, losers, dark horses, and shock snubs at this year's Emmys on 15 September (fingers crossed X-Men '97 snags Outstanding Animation — Snikt! Snikt!), check out our more extensive list of the nominations below:
