Back in August, we learned that Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, the creators of The OA were ready to work in TV again, and specifically on a new murder mystery miniseries called Retreat. The show has taken a big step forward with word that The Crown's Emma Corrin has snagged the lead.
Marling will also play a key role in the series, which will follow a Gen Z amateur sleuth named Darby Hart (Corrin). Darby and 11 other guests are invited by a reclusive billionaire to participate in a Retreat at a remote and dazzling location. When one of the other guests is found dead, Darby must fight to prove it was murder against a tide of competing interests and before the killer takes another life...
Knowing who it comes from, we can expect much more than a simple whodunnit, and indeed this promises to be a "radical conceptualization" of the idea. It'll show up first on US cable channel FX, which makes us think it could well end up here on Disney+ Star, given FX's connection to US streaming service Hulu and the whole Disney-owns-everything nature of entertainment today. Still, the idea of Marling and Batmanglij having the chance to tell a complete story in the wake of the unfair cancellation of The OA is an appealing one.
