Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any minds lost at the sight of the dizzying array of talent involved in Alfonso Cuarón's new TV series. Phew! Now that's out of the way, we can share with you the new teaser trailer for the Gravity filmmaker's upcoming seven-chapter Apple TV+ series Disclaimer* (their asterisk, not ours.) Adapted from Renée Knight's same-named bestseller, Cuarón's self-written and directed new show sees Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, Sacha Baron Cohen, Leslie Manville, and Kodi Smit-McPhee caught in a web of intrigue spun around an acclaimed investigative journalist (Blanchett) whose own dark past catches up with her. Check out the first glimpse of the show below:
"Beware of narrative and form," narrates Blanchett over a series of evocative close-up character shots, "their power can bring us closer to the truth, but because of our own deeply held beliefs and the judgments that we make, they can also be a weapon with a great power to manipulate." It's a powerful, tone-setting statement, and one that looks like it'll come back to haunt her journo Catherine as we snatch glimpses of her son Nicholas (Smit-McPhee) punching a wall, her husband Robert (Cohen) running down a corridor, and what looks like the married couple stood, waist-deep in the sea as a storm brews overhead. It's all stylishly shot (hats off to DP duo Emmanuel Lubezki (The Revenant) and Bruno Delbonnel (Amélie)), properly portentous stuff — a true teaser through and through that just shows enough to hook you in.
If you need a little more of the plot to convince you though, here's the official logline: “Acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. As Catherine races to uncover the writer’s true identity, she is forced to confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Cohen) and their son Nicholas (Smit-McPhee).” Also among Disclaimer's impressive ensemble are Louis Partridge, Leila George, Hoyeon Jung, and Indira Varma.
Finneas O'Connell (as in Billie Eilish's brother Finneas, yes!) is also aboard to score Cuarón's psychological thriller, the Mexican filmmaker's first TV series since fantasy show Believe a decade ago. Disclaimer* will make its two-episode premiere on Apple TV+ on 11 October, with the rest of the series set to drop weekly thereafter. Could Disclaimer*'s asterisk secretly hold the answer to Thunderbolts*' asterisk? Probably not. But that won't stop us trying to make a connection (we see you Hela!).
