For a film that has yet to come out, The Batman is certainly spawning spin-offs quickly. There's already one about the Gotham Police Department in the works and September brought word that a Scarface-style look at the Penguin's rise to criminal power is also in development. We wondered then whether the focus would mean no role for Colin Farrell, who plays the character in Matt Reeves' movie, but Deadline now reports that he's aboard to star and executive produce.
Lauren LeFranc is attached to write the script for the series, which will look at Oswald Cobblepot's grasping and clawing amid the Gotham City underbelly. Whether it'll end up crossing over into the movie's events remains to be seen. Farrell is on record as saying he doesn't appear in much of the film, so this is clearly designed to give him an extra story to play.
Reeves will also executive produce along with The Batman producer Dylan Clark. The film is due on 4 March 2022, by which time we expect seven more shows to have spun-off.
