After a quick cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home and a memorable, funny, charismatic return in She-Hulk, Charlie Cox's Daredevil, AKA lawyer Matt Murdock is getting his own series in 2024 via Daredevil: Born Again. But if you're worried about the tone of the show after the bone-crunching, blood-spilling Netflix series, Charlie Cox has some words for you.
In a new interview with the NME Cox talked about the direction for the new show.
"This has to be a reincarnation, it has to be different, otherwise why are we doing it?” he says. So… less brooding, more gags? Probably not so much. "My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory."
And if you're hoping for a more straightforward continuation of the Netflix series' tone? "I would say to those people, we’ve done that. Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?"
Cox recently learned that he'll be spending most of 2023 filming the show in New York. Which makes sense, since the first season will comprise 18 - count 'em – episodes.
"I’m fascinated to discover why they’ve chosen to do 18,” Cox admits. "I’m imagining there’s going to be an element to it that is like the old-school procedural show. Not necessarily case-of-the-week, but something where we go really deep into Matt Murdock the lawyer and get to see what his life is like. If that’s done right and he really gets his hands dirty with that world… I think there’s something quite interesting about that, to spend a lot of time in a superhero’s day-to-day life and you really earn the moments when he suits up."
With Vincent D'Onofrio returning as Kingpin and the likes of Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini and Sandrine Holt joining the cast, Daredevil: Born Again should be on Disney+ in 2024.
