Can a sitcom be reconceived as a drama? That's the thinking powering Morgan Cooper 2019 trailer Bel-Air, which took The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and turned it into a darker, coming-of-age story. That caught the attention of the Fresh Prince himself, Will Smith and the concept is now the driver for a new show, also called Bel-Air that is headed to streaming service Peacock next month. Taking the same basic story as the 1980s sitcom that launched Smith upon the world, Bel-Air follows the character of Will (Jabari Banks here) on complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. As these two worlds collide, Will reckons with the power of second chances while navigating the conflicts, emotions, and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known.
Adrian Holmes, Cassandra Freeman, Olly Sholotan, Coco Jones, Akira Akbar, Jimmy Akingbola, Jordan L. Jones and Simone Joy Jones also star, and, after some creative quibbles saw it jettison its initial showrunners, the behind-the-scenes team includes T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson.
Bel-Air kicks off with three episodes on 13 February before moving to a weekly schedule. Given Peacock's deal with Sky and NOW TV, that should mean it'll be viewable in the UK.
