Last week we learned that Midnight Mass star Hamish Linklater is leading an all-star voice cast for Bruce Timm, Matt Reeves, and J.J. Abrams' hotly anticipated animated series Batman: Caped Crusader. Now, Prime Video have given us our first look at the Bat in action with the enigmatic first trailer for the Batman: The Animated Series spiritual successor, which sees Gotham's finest — and worst — all out to get the Dark Knight. Check it out below:
An unhinged bomber's on the loose, supervillains — Harley Quinn! Two-Face! The Penguin! And is that Green Arrow serial killer Onomatopoeia? — stalk the streets of Gotham, and the city's vigilantist hero is also the biggest target of its leaders and citizens' disdain. "What do you think about the Batman?" asks Gotham's mayor at the start of this tense new trailer. On present evidence, what we think is that this Batman is looking pretty darn good. With The Animated Series' noir aesthetic and mature tone visibly forming the foundation for this series' darker exploration of the Dark Knight's mythos, Caped Crusader — with its Tommy gun-toting crooks, chiaroscuro lighting, and high stakes storyline — looks to be a riveting crime-thriller that will push the World's Greatest Detective to his limits.
Here's the official synopsis: "Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions will also spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications."
Among the rogues gallery Linklater's Bat will face this series are Christina Ricci's Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Jamie Chung's Harley Quinn/Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and Diedrich Bader's Harvey Dent/Two-Face. They join an impressive voice cast including *deep breath* Minnie Driver, Mckenna Grace, Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. Bonilla, Krystal Joy Brown, John DiMaggio, Paul Scheer, Reid Scott, Tom Kenny, Jason Watkins, Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Donohue, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel Osment, and Toby Stephens.
All ten episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader land on Prime Video on Thursday, 1 August. Just enough time for you to head to your Batcave, load up your Battop, grab some Batsnacks, and get settled in for some unbatlievable Bat action.
