While the Coronavirus pandemic is causing rethinks in several upcoming awards ceremonies, including next year’s Oscars, things are moving ahead as normal with the BAFTA TV awards. And by ‘as normal’, we mean it’s still happening, but without a live audience and with the winners sending in video acceptance speeches. The nominees have just been revealed, detailing the full list of shows, performances and more in with a chance of winning.

Leading the way with 14 overall nominations is HBO and Sky Atlantic’s Chernobyl. The five-part series is nominated in the Mini-series category, with Craig Mazin nominated as its writer, Jared Harris up for Leading Actor, Stellan Skarsgard up for Supporting Actor, and a nod for Hildur Guðnadóttir’s music. The third season of The Crown – which moved Netflix’s royal period drama into a new era – receives seven nominations, including nods for Josh O’Connor as Supporting Actor and Helena Bonham Carter as Supporting Actress, and a coveted nomination for Drama Series.

The Crown

The second season of Fleabag also fared well. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is nominated for her writing, as well as for Female Performance In A Comedy Programme, where co-star Sian Clifford was also nominated. The series is also nominated in the overall Scripted Comedy category. There was good news too for the BBC’s British-Japanese drama Giri/Haji, which received six nominations, while Shane Meadows’ drama The Virtues was nominated in Mini-Series, Director, Writer, Leading Actor for Stephen Graham, and Supporting Actress for Helen Behan.

There are some notable omissions – Andrew Scott might have got everybody hot under the religious collar in Fleabag, but hasn’t been nominated for his role in Series 2, while Olivia Colman hasn’t been nominated for her role as Elizabeth II in The Crown. The likes of Line Of Duty, Peaky Blinders, Years And Years and the Gavin And Stacy special are also absent from many of the major categories. The (admittedly controversial) final season of Game Of Thrones missed out in the International category, while HBO's hugely-acclaimed Watchmen series was also snubbed.
