Following her success as a director and producer for both movies and TV, Ava DuVernay has wasted no time in setting up a production company and supporting others in their creative endeavors. She's now teaming up with Rise Of Skywalker second unit director Victoria Mahoney to adapt Octavia E. Butler's sci-fi classic Dawn for Amazon.

The potential TV series would bring to screens the first part of Butler's Lilith's Brood trilogy, in which a an African-American woman works with aliens to resurrect humanity 250 years after a devastating nuclear conflict. The 1987 original was followed by Adulthood Rites and Imago in 1988 and 1989, meaning there's plenty of material to fuel this one.

It's far from the first Butler story making its way through development – Amazon also has herWild Seedin the works – and there was talk a decade ago of a movie based on Clay's Ark.

Mahoney (who also worked with DuVernay on her Queen Sugar series) will lead the charge on this one, writing and directing the series should the green light flash.
