Beyond the creatures' Japanese cinematic legacy, we've got used to seeing Godzilla and his gigantic chums through Legendary and Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse movies. Legendary now has big plans for the small screen, with an untitled MonsterVerse live-action show in the works at Apple TV+.

Star Trek: Enterprise and Outcast veteran Chris Black is teaming up with Hawkeye* comic book writer Matt Fraction for the new show, which will follow the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real. The series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

It all sounds like a direct spin-off of the movies' story, which has expanded the monster mythology to include King Kong and some creatures created just for these films, but Apple is describing this as an original series. The company certainly seems to be setting itself up as the home of big-scale sci-fi visions – the new show joins the likes of Foundation, Invasion and the adaptation of Hugh Howey's Wool novels.

And this is not the monster monster-fuelled show stomping towards screens, as Netflix has animated adventure series Skull Island, based on 2017's solo Kong outing, on the way.
