A lot has been written about Amazon's ambitious plan to bring stories drawn from the world of JRR Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings to the screen. Not least the huge deal to secure the rights and the resources poured into the production, which has faced some bumps along the way. Now, though, the company is ready to debut the show's first season, albeit not until next year. And as production on the first season wraps, a first look image has arrived online and can be seen above.

Amazon is choosing to stay mysterious about the show for now – we don't know the official title, nor will the company reveal who is standing in that first pic.

Here's what is known... The series is set in the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. Beginning in a time of relative peace, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings books, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

As for the sprawling cast, that comprises Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman and Sara Zwangobani.

JD Payne and Patrick McKay are running the show, with JA Bayona involved as an executive producer and director along with fellow director Charlotte Brändström.

The series will kick off worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on 2 September next year, and episodes will reportedly be released weekly. Will there be one trailer to rule them all? No, probably several.
