You spend months waiting for one bit of Succession news and then two come along at once. Everyone's favourite terrifying family drama has added two key cast members for season 3: Adrien Brody and Alexander Skarsgård. It's not like the Roy family needed any more highly-strung and deeply intense nemeses, but there's also no such thing as too many.
The Pianist's Adrien Brody has been pretty busy on screens both big and small for the last few years – he's got four (!) films on the horizon including Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch and forthcoming Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, and will be playing NBA titan Pat Riley in Adam McKay's sports drama about the Los Angeles Lakers. In Succession, he's starring as Josh Aaronson, a billionaire activist investor who becomes pivotal in the battle for the ownership of Waystar.
For Skarsgård it's the latest in a string of HBO projects after_Big Little Lies_ and True Blood. He'll be playing Lukas Matsson: a new character described as "a successful, confrontational tech founder and CEO" according to Variety. He should fit right in with the Roy family.
Returning cast members for Jesse Armstrong's intense family drama series are Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Hiam Abbass, Nicholas Braun, Peter Friedman, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Rob Yang and more. There are a few fresh faces as well as Skarsgård set to join the show, with Sanaa Lathan, Linda Edmond and Jihae all appearing in season 3.
The new episodes of Succession were delayed in light of the coronavirus pandemic last year, with filming initially planned to commence at the start of 2020. We're still awaiting a premiere date for the show's highly anticipated return – although at long last, production is well under way in New York.
For now, a logline teased by HBO reads: "Ambushed by his rebellious son Kendall at the end of season two, Logan Roy begins season three in a perilous position. Scrambling to secure familial, political and financial alliances, tensions rise as a bitter corporate battle threatens to turn into a family civil war.” Better not expect any kind of happy family reunion, then.
