Time marches on for the X-Men team and their experiences here point to the fact that few of them will be queuing up to go on those I Love The '90s shows. The first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix (or simply Dark Phoenix across the pond) has arrived and it's looking like the use of 'dark' will particularly apply.
It's 1992, and the team are rocketing away on more missions than ever, as Charles Xavier (James McAvoy)'s ego and drive to bring heroes to the world starts to get the better of them. During a rescue mission in space, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together.
Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
This is writer/producer – and now director – Simon Kinberg's second crack at the Phoenix storyline after X-Men: The Last Stand, and he's aiming to make up for the previous treatment's inability to do it justice. He's been working away on this one, including a more recent set of pickup shooting to tweak various scenes.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will soar into UK cinemas on 5 February next year, ahead of a Valentine's Day release in the States.
