Uncharted is one of those movies that has been simmering away in development for years, burning through directors and possible actors. The game adaptation has just taken a potential step forward, as Shawn Levy has stepped aboard to direct.
We say, "potential" because Sony and this title have been here before. Several times, in fact. The likes of David O. Russell and Seth Gordon were attached to direct at different points, with Mark Wahlberg and perennial fan casting favourite Nathan Fillion either part of the package or demanded as main character Nathan Drake.
The Uncharted series, of course, is a globe-trotting, loot-hunting set of games for the PlayStation consoles, following our Indy-alike hero Drake on his trips to the likes of El Dorado, Shambala and the Iram of the Pillars. Along the way, Drake quips many a quip and shoots many a henchman.
The latest script is by Joe Carnahan, who had been considering directing but is focusing on Bad Boys For Life.
So now Levy faces the challenge of wrangling this uncooperative behemoth into cinemas, and certainly has experience with bigger films. He's also had success this year with Stranger Things, acting as executive producer and directing several episodes. Can the Nathan Drake story finally be told? You'll pardon us if we don't hold our breath just yet.
