Despite years of bringing the Resident Evil franchise to the screens, writer/director Paul WS Anderson and star/ass-kicker Milla Jovovich are back with a new film based on a video game. And the first official image from Monster Hunter is now online, which you can see above.

Originally premiered over atIGN, the image has now been generally released by Sony. We also have a proper synopsis to go with the picture... "Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When Lt. Artemis (Jovovich) and her loyal soldiers are transported from our world to the new world, the unflappable lieutenant receives the shock of her life. In her desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers and unstoppable, revolting attacks, Artemis will team up with a mysterious man who has found a way to fight back."

Tony Jaa, also seen in the image, is that man, The Hunter. Those who've played the game might guess that Jovovich's character was created for the movie, a plan Anderson reveals is to offer an avatar for the audience, a fresh way into the world. And we're promised that much of the weapons and other equipment comes straight from the virtual Monster Hunter world.

With Meagan Good, TI, Diego Boneta and Ron Perlman also in the cast, Monster Hunter is shooting now in South Africa.
