There's a concern that screens big and small are becoming oversaturated with superhero stories; how many more times can we be introduced to someone with powers? Raising Dion, however, looks to argue its case, presenting a different type of tale. The new Netflix series features the backing of Michael B. Jordan (who will have a small role in the show) and showrunner Carol Barbee.
The series, planned to kick off with a 10-episode first run, is based on music video and ads director Dennis Liu's concept, who created a comic book and directed a short from it that became a viral hit (you can watch it at the bottom of the page). The story follows Nicole Reese, who raises her son Dion after the death of her husband Mark (Jordan). The normal dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion starts to manifest several magical, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend Pat, and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities. Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green and MACRO company boss Charles D. King are also aboard.
"I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I'm excited to partner with Netflix and MACRO, who I know shares that commitment," says Liu, who will also serve as an executive producer. "More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry."
Jordan has a little experience with people who explore powers at a younger age – one of his big breaks was in Chronicle. There's no word yet on when the new series will launch.
