Having scored big (including five Oscar nominations) with her directorial debut Lady Bird, there has been plenty of speculation as to what Greta Gerwig might do next behind the camera. Despite talk of more movies set in Sacramento, she's now gearing up for a big new project, working on Little Women with Lady Bird's Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet in talks alongside Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Florence Pugh.

Gerwig had been writing the script for the latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic tale of sisters, first love and Civil War mores, and is now also stepping into the director's chair.

Assuming all the deals close, that would be quite the stacked cast for the film, whose story was most recently brought to the screen by the Beeb for last Christmas. Sony and producer Amy Pascal, who has been trying to make a film based on the story for a while now, are providing the backing, and if all the pieces fall into place, it will likely shoot this year.
