Comicbook god and force of nature Mark Millar worked for years with Marvel, playing in the company's universe and creating memorable storylines that have made their way into the MCU. Feeling the need for a little more control of his own output, he also created Millarworld, which gave him his own stable of characters and concepts to spin into movie and TV ideas. Now the company has been bought by Netflix, which will make movies, TV series and kids' shows based on the characters he's birthed.
"As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wantedand Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee," says Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. "We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling." A hefty comparison to make, though we can't help but wonder if MM's catchphrase is less "Excelsior!" and more "Fuckkit!"
Still, he seems happy with the deal. "This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level," says Millar. "I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home." That, and he's probably going to get a free subscription out of it.
Millar runs Millarworld with his wife, Lucy, who will continue to have an active role in the company as it evolves into its next stage. Will we see the Millar Cinematic Universe in a few years? Probably... His next film spin-off, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, arrives here on 20 September.
