While studios are going full speed ahead to build franchises and expand upon known properties that they own, not everything can be a success on the level on the MCU. To try to make sure it has a better chance, Sony is making the tough choice to remove Spider-Man spin-off Silver & Black from the release schedule and send it back into development for another script draft.
The eventual movie itself should see a team-up between Silver Sable (a mercenary who hunts war criminals) and Black Cat, the daughter of a famous cat burglar who follows in his footsteps while mastering any number of acrobatic skills and fighting styles.
Beyond The Lights' Gina Prince-Blythewood, who has been dipping her toes into the superhero world directing an episode of new series Cloak And Dagger, is attached to make the movie, and she's been working on the script with Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The film had been handed a February 2019 release date, but Sony will slot in Tom Hanks starrer Greyhound instead.
Talking to Collider, Prince-Blythewood offered more details about the situation, explaining that the film hasn't been scrapped, just delayed. "With Silver & Black, when you’re doing a film of that magnitude, it’s gotta be right. And if it’s not right, we actually collectively decided to go back to the drawing board and start over. That’s gonna take time," she says. "So obviously, I’d love to be shooting right now, but to be shooting something that I know is not as good as it can be, I’m not the type that wants to shoot something you’re rewriting, as you’re shooting. So, we have to get the script right, and I’m okay to wait. I may be shooting something before that, but it really is just get the script right before we go on that journey."
The next spin-off from the Spider-Verse will be Venom, due here on 5 October.
