In the annals of team-ups we didn't expect to see, Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling has got to be right up there. And yet, they will co-star in an untitled new movie set in the world of late-night talk shows.
Kaling also wrote the movie and will produce it alongside Scott Rudin. The plot finds Thompson as a veteran chat host in danger of losing her long-running series. That potential calamity just happens to coincide with her hiring the first female writer (Kaling) in the show's history.
There's no studio attached yet, but the combination of two respected talents already has the companies contemplating a bidding war for the rights.
It's a busy time for Kaling, who in addition to starring in and running her own TV series (sitcom The Mindy Project), she also has film roles lined up in Ocean's Eight (the female-led Ocean's Eleven spin-off) and A Wrinkle In Time. Thompson is no slouch either, having contributed script re-writes and appearing in Bridget Jones's Baby and voicing Mrs. Potts in the new live-action Beauty and The Beast, which will arrive on UK shores on 17 March.
