Denzel Washington's most recent directorial effort, Fences, scored him Oscar nominations for the film and his own performance. He's circling similarly emotive – and this time, based-on-truth – material for a potential new project, with Mudbound writer Virgil Williams adapting A Journal For Jordan.

The film will chronicle Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Dana Canedy's relationship with a soldier named Charles Monroe King. Deployed overseas in combat zones, he began writing a journal full of life lessons for their newborn son Jordan, which blossomed into a 200-page tome in 2005. In a tragic twist, he was killed by a roadside bomb a year later, when Jordan was just seven months old.

Washington was already on board as a producer for the film, but is now aiming to direct it. Williams, meanwhile, just shared an Academy Award nomination with Mudbound director Dee Rees in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. If Jordan turns out well, he could be headed for another nomination in the future.
