Warner Bros. has had Akira in development for years, with numerous script drafts and zero finished films. But that isn't putting the company off adapting Japanese media, and negotiations are well under way for the rights to make a movie based on Attack On Titan, with Harry Potter's David Heyman attached to produce.
Created by Hajime Isayama in 2009, the series sees giant aliens known as Titans arriving on Earth and nearly wiping humanity out, eating many of the survivors. Giant walls are constructed around the remaining human city to keep them out, and now, a hundred years later, an uneasy peace exists. Some people have grown up without even seeing a Titan in the flesh, but that all changes when one of the giant, muscled creatures breaches the outer wall, and humankind is forced back into battle against the powerful threat.
The heroes of the tale, at least in the early going, are Eren Yeager, his foster sister, Mikasa Ackerman, and their childhood friend Armin Arlert, who enlist in the armed forces after Eren's mother is one of those who falls victim to the Titans' appetites during the new breach. But there is more to the Titans' story than anyone initially realises...
Several animated TV series and movies have been made and Heyman plans to use the Japanese film that appeared in two parts in 2015. It sounds like someone Heyman could tackle given his experience, though of course it risks the sort of concerns that have been raised about fellow Manga acquisitions Akira, Ghost In The Shell and even Alita: Battle Angel.
