You may already be aware that Ridley Scott is going full steam ahead on a film about the real-life John Paul Getty III kidnapping case from the 1970s. He'll have a little competition on the adaptation front, as Danny Boyle has been working up a TV miniseries version, and has landed Hilary Swank to star.
She'll play Gail Getty (nee Harris), the mother of the kidnap victim who is desperate to get her son back when he's snatched while partying in Rome. Despite the great wealth of the family she married into (especially Donald Sutherland's J. Paul Getty, her father-in-law, and one of the richest men in the world), her acrimonious split from her husband sees her forced to try to pay the million-dollar ransom despite having no funds of her.
The first 10-episode season will be set in 1973 and sees the chaos that ensued after the younger Getty is kidnapped by the Mafia. The police thought it was a prank, Gail's husband is in a heroin funk in London and her former father-in-law is initially unwilling to help.
Boyle has regular collaborators Simon Beaufoy (writing and executive producing) and Christian Colson (producing), with the director planning to handle all the episodes himself. US cable network FX, which has had success with the likes of American Horror Story is backing this one.
