At last year's D23 event, Disney and Pixar announced a few details about a future film from the Emeryville studio's prodigious team. Now we have a title for that movie – Onward – and an idea of the main cast, with word that Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus will lend their voices.
Dreamt up and to be directed by Monsters University's Dan Scanlon, Onward is set in a suburban fantasy world populated by elves, trolls and sprites, where unicorns trawl through garbage cans like candy-striped possums. It offers the premise that magic was real but has long since been forgotten and replaced by modern technology, and finds two teenage brothers whose father died when they were too young to remember him. They set out into this fantasy world to spend one last magical day with him.
"At Pixar we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth," Scanlon says. "This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother." The siblings lost their own father at a young age, so it draws from the family tragedy too.
The movie is now set for a 6 March, 2020 release – at least in the States. We'll have to see if it'll arrive here around the same time, though there is an Untitled Pixar film sitting among the UK release dates for 19 June that year...
