Ben Mendelsohn's been on a run of cinematic bad guys recently, including Rogue One's Director Krennic. And he may be continuing that if Captain Marvel directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck get their way: they want him as the movie's big bad, according to Variety.
Brie Larson is playing the title character, a skilled test pilot named Carol Danvers whose DNA is melded with that of Kree warrior Mar-Vell. Subsequently, she gains powers such as flight, enhanced strength, damage resistance and the ability to absorb and re-channel energy.
At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel boss Kevin Feige announced that the film would be set in the 1990s, feature Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury at a time before he lost an eye and will see Danvers battling the shapeshifting alien enemies known as the Skrulls. It sounds like Mendelsohn could be playing a Skrull leader, though obviously we won't know for sure until he's confirmed for the film and more information arrives.
Still, Boden and Fleck have a leg up on casting him, having directed the actor in 2015's Mississippi Grind. Captain Marvel is aiming for an 8 March, 2019 release for Stateside audiences and here.
Mendelsohn will next be seen in Darkest Hour, out on 12 January. He'll be filling villainous shoes in two upcoming films, Ready Player One (due 30 March next year) and the latest version of Robin Hood, which should be on our screens on 21 September.
