Michelle Williams stars in this World War II drama based on the book by Irène Némirovsky. She’s Lucile, a French woman awaiting news of her POW husband while living with his sour-faced mother (Kristin Scott Thomas).

When the Nazi occupation reaches their village, they’re forced to take in a German officer, Bruno (Matthias Schoenaerts), who happens to be sensitive, cultured and handsome. Ensuing events verge on the soapy, and not all Lucile’s decisions invite sympathy. But there’s an unsettling undercurrent of realism as less principled officers exploit their standing and events in the village reach fever pitch.

Sterling performances lift the occasionally soapy storyline in this semi-successful adaptation.
