The movie itself is on the way shortly, but there's still time for a few new looks at Star Wars: The Last Jedi. This time, the pics come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

These latest images catch up with the characters and their various, differing ambitions and experiences in the film. Daisy Ridley's Rey, for example, is attempting to explore her powers with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), but facing resistance from the aging Jedi, who worries about a potential new apprentice turning out like Adam Driver's Kylo Ren.

And talking of Kylo, he's still burning with fury and vengeance after learning of Rey's abilities – but could there be a different path for the pair as opposed to just being enemies. John Boyega's Finn, meanwhile, is still not sure he wants to be part of a huge battle, but is convinced to go on a mission for the Resistance, joined by enthusiastic engineer Rose (Kelly Marie Tran). And in the higher echelons of Resistance command, we have Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron butting heads with Laura Dern's Vice Admiral Holdo, without realising that they were both trained by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).

Writer/director Rian Johnson outlines to the magazine just part of what he wanted to explore in The Last Jedi: "There’s a history in Star Wars of the attraction between the light and the dark, whether it’s the story of Anakin basically turning from this sweet kid and seeing his seduction to the dark side, or even with Luke,” Johnson says. "Even though you never really believe he’s going to go over to the dark side, the whole revelation of 'I am your father' has to do with Vader and this darkness that Luke thought he could just dismiss as 'That’s the bad guy. I don’t have any of him in me'. Suddenly he realizes 'No, I come from him. I have quite a bit of him inside me.'"
