While he's occasionally made his social media presence felt via the Bad Robot account, JJ Abrams hasn't had his own Twitter account until now. He's picked quite the day to launch it, reporting on the first day of shooting on Star Wars Episode IX.

Blending emotion with practicality (and a nice shout-out to The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson), it's the first image from behind the scenes of the next main chapter film, though it's tough to tell exactly what we're looking at besides film equipment.

Beyond the basics of continuing the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and more, Abrams has wrapped the story for the new movie (which he co-wrote with Chris Terrio) in the usual level of secrecy. What is known, however, is that unused footage from The Force Awakens will be employed to bring the late Carrie Fisher into the story as General Leia Organa and that the cast also includes returning performers Lupita Nyong'o, Billie Lourd, Joonas Suotamo and Domhnall Gleeson joined by new recruits Keri Russell, Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant.

With the cameras now rolling at London's Pinewood Studios, the movie will arrive on 19 December next year.
