One of the first films in which Steve Martin demonstrated he could do more than just be a wild'n'crazy guy, this big-hearted update of the 'Cyrano De Bergerac' story sees him as fireman C.D. Bales, whose attraction to new girl in town Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) is impeded by his Pinocchio-sized schnozz.
Rick Rossovich (who he?) is engaging as the colleague who also has designs on the lass, and no embarrassingly large facial appendages, but the movie belongs to Martin, who blends pathos and warmth with his trademark brilliant comic timing. And the scene in which he comes up with 20 Insults More Original Than Big Nose still remains a classic to this day.
