Timing is everything in a music documentary, and Raymond De Felitta was lucky to encounter bebopper Jackie Paris during his 2004 swansong. Ranked by some critics alongside Frank Sinatra, Paris made just four albums, and De Felitta discovers that it was a career sabotaged by misfortune and ego.
He also finds a disaffected son during a tabloidesque coda as misjudged as having Peter Bogdanovich read old reviews. But the fascination here lies in watching the septuagenarian tinkering with his legend during recollections that are counterpointed by deeply moving live performances.
