Strange Magic Review

This was a passion project for executive producer George Lucas but a US box office flop. Inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this shares little more than a love potion with Shakespeare as fairy Marianne (Wood) sets out to rescue her sister from the sinister Bog King (Cumming). The fairy-tale mayhem is more The Black Cauldron than The Dark Crystal, and while there are fun moments, the whole is an odd mix of grotesquerie and cutesiness. But it’s the jukebox musical element that really falls flat — surprising given director Gary Rydstrom’s storied career in sound.
