South Pacific Review
On one of the Solomon Islands, where the US Navy has established a base in preparation for a Pacific invasion, planter Emile de Becque (Rossano Brazzi) is approached by US nurse Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor) as an envoy for the Navy, who wish to use him as a scout to the Japanese held islands nearby. Romance and confusion ensues.
Original Title:South Pacific
"Corny as Kansas in August", the miscegenation theme is embarrassingly offensive and the lurid colour is an eyesore.
Rosanno Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor never convince, either, as the mismatched lovers who meet Some Enchanted Evening, but she and the subplot cast are delightful in the merrier numbers like I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair and Nothing Like A Dame
Over coloured and over long, this musical has a couple of top songs but as you're likely to doze off waiting for them to come around, you might miss them altogether. Best just buy the soundtrack.
