Original Title:

A Royal Night Out

Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret do a runner from the palace on VE Day and spend a night among London’s riff-raff, in this cheerful farce that often feels scaled down for Sunday-night TV. Bel Powley as Margaret pulls focus, despite only being a supporting role, with a gawping, jolly hockeysticks delight at everything the normal world has to offer.

A key romantic plot between Princess Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and a soldier played by Jack Reynor unfortunately flounders due to the wearying constant chippiness of Reynor’s character. Thank gawd, then, that she ended up marrying elsewhere.

A cheerful comedy-drama with charm to spare.
