Damn that much-invoked law of diminishing returns. Paul Verhoeven's original part-man/part-machine actioner remains a true treat, a perfectly-formed time capsule of Reagan's capitalist America - with buckets of blood to boot. That's particularly true in this uncut form, featuring even more of Murphy's execution and ED-209's first kill.
Beautifully satirical and ingeniously shot, it's so good, however, that parts two and three are here shown up for what they really are. Irvin Kershner bungles his follow-up, pitching robo vs. robo in what, odd moment aside, more resembles a hyper-violent Transformers episode. And the less said about the gore-less third (it followed the kiddies' cartoon series, after all), the better.
